The municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment has reported the existence of 120 waste accumulation hotspots throughout the city. The list comprises 13 newly discovered sites, 21 locations awaiting cleanup, and 86 areas that suffered from recurring pollution after previous clearing efforts. The illegally dumped refuse, which consists heavily of construction debris, is typically found on vacant plots far from residential zones, along local waterways, and near ongoing construction projects.
Enhanced Penalties and Future Solutions
To combat this issue, local authorities have expanded the use of surveillance cameras, leading to successful penalties in areas like Binh Chanh Commune and Tan My Ward, where offenders were fined VND1.5 million each. The scale of the waste management challenge is immense, as the newly expanded city now produces roughly 14,000 metric tons of domestic waste every single day. To address this mounting pressure, city planners aim to move away from traditional landfills and treat more than 90 percent of domestic waste using high-tech methods by 2030. Under the current timeline, three major waste-to-energy projects are expected to start in 2026.
For local communities, this intensified crackdown on illegal dumping and the shift toward advanced waste treatment technologies offer hope for a cleaner and healthier living environment in the near future.
