Saigon River Waterway to Close Temporarily as Pedestrian Bridge Arch Is Joined
Waterway traffic on a section of the Saigon River will close temporarily on October 19, 21, and 22 so crews can install the 3,400-ton steel arch of the pedestrian bridge linking Bach Dang Wharf and Thu Thiem.

- River traffic will stop on October 19 (13:00–19:00) for barge mooring and on October 21 and 22 (02:00–18:00 each day) to lift and join the 3,400-ton steel arch on October 21.
- The nearly VND1 trillion (US$38 million) pedestrian bridge linking Bach Dang Wharf and the Thu Thiem New Urban Area is fully funded by Nutifood as the city's first build-transfer project with no government payment.
- Begun in late March 2025, construction is about 90 percent complete with both approach spans finished by CC1, while river traffic control stations remain active until December 7.
Ho Chi Minh City will temporarily close a section of the Saigon River waterway on October 19, 21, and 22 to install and join the main steel arch of the pedestrian bridge linking downtown Bach Dang Wharf with the Thu Thiem New Urban Area. Costing nearly VND1 trillion (US$38 million) and fully funded by Nutifood as a donation to the city, it is Ho Chi Minh City's first build-transfer (BT) project with no government payment.
Waterway Closure Windows and Bridge Progress
The 3,400-ton steel arch, inspired by a nipa palm leaf, is being towed from Ghenh Rai Bay toward Bach Dang Wharf to be joined on October 21. River traffic will stop during three windows:
- October 19 (13:00–19:00): Traffic suspended for barge entry and mooring.
- October 21 (02:00–18:00): Waterway closed for lifting, positioning, and joining work.
- October 22 (02:00–18:00): Waterway closed for continued lifting and connection work.
Upstream and downstream traffic control stations will operate until December 7, and vessels must obey control personnel and signs. Begun in late March 2025, the bridge is roughly 90 percent complete. Construction Corporation No. 1 (CC1) has finished both approach spans, with the deck, railings, and landscaping remaining. Once completed, the bridge is expected to improve cross-river links and serve as a new public space and tourism attraction.
Anyone planning to take a Saigon River waterbus or boat tour on October 19, 21, or 22 should check operating schedules in advance.
